Professor Tan Cheng Han, S.C.

Dear Friend,

The annual Law IV production has been an honourable tradition of the NUS Faculty of Law since the late eighties. Each year, the graduating class will put on an ambitious musical to raise funds for a worthy cause in Singapore. The graduating class of 2008 is no exception and the net proceeds raised from their production to be held from the 21st-23rd September 2007 will be donated to the Children’s Cancer Foundation and the Straits Times School Pocket Money Fund.

I have referred to this series of musicals as an honourable tradition not only because it contributes positively to society, but also because it represents an important aspect of the education experience at the NUS Law School. A legal education at NUS is not aimed simply at producing technically excellent lawyers. We feel that legal education must go further; it must develop the entire person and includes values such as compassion and a wider concern for one’s society. This effort by the Class of 2008 and previous graduating classes is consistent with our overall educational philosophy.

I hope therefore, that you will be able to support this commendable effort by the Class of 2008 through a generous donation and other forms of support that you may be able to offer.

Yours sincerely,
Professor Tan Cheng Han, S.C.
Dean and Head of Department

Mrs. Yu-Foo Yee Shoon

I congratulate the LAW IV Committee of the Faculty of Law, National University of Singapore, on their stage musical, Kopi Shop Rock. The funds raised from this event will be donated to the Straits Times Pocket Money Fund and the Children’s Cancer Foundation.

It is very heartening to note that increasingly more of our youth are getting involved in charitable causes. It sends a very positive signal to the community and Singaporeans that our youth have the right values. This musical production speaks volumes of their social mission and eagerness to serve the less fortunate in our society.

I would like to commend the organising committee of Kopi Shop Rock for bringing across this message of hope and care in such a creative fashion. I wish them every success in this meaningful project.

Mrs. Yu-Foo Yee Shoon

Youth and Sports

Mrs. Ellen Lee Geck Hoon

I congratulate the graduating class of 2008 for continuing the good tradition of its predecessors in putting up a musical production, Kopi Shop Rock in aid of The Straits Times School Pocket Money Fund and the Children’s Cancer Foundation.

There are good reasons for helping children – they are the most vulnerable group in society and they should not be deprived of help, especially in our affluent society. It is quite easy to overlook children’s needs, as they are often the less vocal or articulate group and most people naturally assume that they are being somehow taken care of by their parents or guardians.

We, at Ramdas & Wong, are most happy to be able to partner the graduating class to do our bit for our children, the future leaders of tomorrow.

We wish you a successful performance and look forward to welcome the graduates as they enter the legal fraternity!

Mrs. Ellen Lee Geck Hoon
MP for Sembawang GRC

about law iv

about law iv

Every year, the graduating class of law students comes together to put up a musical for a charitable cause. In September, the Class of 2008 will present their very own original musical - Kopi Shop Rock!

Kopi Shop Rock promises to take us back to the good ole rocking seventies, to a good old fashioned love story, complete with the outdoor movie date, kacang puteh and the rainbow-coloured ice ball. Throw in the vicious street gang, the retired cabaret queen, her long-time flame, the regular scheming sister and you're in for the Kopi Shop Rock experience!

Our Adopted Charities

This year, the beneficiaries are the Straits Time Pocket Money Fund and the Children's Cancer Foundation.

Children's Cancer Foundation (link)

Children's Cancer FoundationThe Children's Cancer Foundation (CCF) is an independent organisation, solely funded by public and corporate donations. As such, they regularly engage in fund raising activities.

CCF is staffed by a team of trained professionals and has a group of committed volunteers. To date, CCF has helped about 1,300 families since 1996 by providing counselling, employing therapeutic play, conducting support groups, organising children and family outings, offering financial assistance, educating the families, supporting training and research, and promoting public awareness.

Straits Times Pocket Money Fund (link)

ST Pocket Money FundThe School Pocket Money Fund (SPMF) is an annual community project that is initiated by The Straits Times and administered by the National Council of Social Services (NCSS).

The SPMF aims to ease the financial burden faced by low-income families in providing for their children’s education. For many of them, it is a sad fact that their parents truly have difficulties making ends meet, to the point of being unable to provide them with pocket money of $1 - $2 a day. This also makes it very difficult for some of these children to remain in school.

The SPMF helps to provide a monthly allowance of $30 to each primary school-going recipient and $50 per month to each secondary school student beneficiary.

cast list

cast list

Francis Cheah as Joshua Kwan

FrancisFrancis Cheah, a seasoned thespian from Penang will take the stage as the romantic lead Joshua Kwan. In Kopi Shop Rock, Francis will get not one, but two stage kisses from the leading ladies! The self-professed romantic says he has much to learn from his stage character Joshua who wins Eliza’s heart by sheer wit and a serenade or two... or so he thinks. *canned evil laughter*

Eunice Ng as Eliza Chan

EuniceThe beautiful Eunice Ng plays the opinionated and ambitious Eliza Chan who pines for a life away from Lim Peh Street, from the Golden Rose Kopitiam and housewifery. Instead she wants to venture through Italy with its towers precarious, scale the walls up in China, see the bright lights of Paris and get a degree along the way. Can sheer wit and a serenade or two win her over to Joshua’s happily-ever-after plan?

Susie Ann Smith as Melody Chan

SusieMelody Chan is different, defiant and daring. Susie plays the extremely attractive Melody Chan, the sister all the boys love and whose own sister would love to hate. Melody is described by Allan in the musical as “just like chilli padi… wah shiok” and indeed we promise you nothing less than a feisty ball of fun with Melody Chan!

Julia Kan as Rose Chan

JuliaJulia insists that she is no diva and that is why playing Rose Chan, the Golden Rose of Gay World Cabaret is particularly challenging. She describes Rose as vivacious, fan-ta-bu-lous, and super duper diva la!

In the musical, Julia tackles the role of Rose Chan, the undisputed cabaret super star who was forced into early retirement when the black and white TV came along. Rose moves to Lim Peh street and starts over as the proprietor of the Golden Rose Kopitiam wistfully reminiscing the days of glory...

Qin Zhiqian as Mr. Kwan

ZhiqianZhiqian also insists that he is not the diva but with that voice, one wonders why not? Zhiqian is an accomplished singer, winning accolades for his performances in the 2007 Stardust Singing competition and the national Chinese Song Writing Competition (Best Performance). However Zhiqian is also a seasoned procrastinator, having missed the auditions for both Singapore Idol and ‘Jue Dui Superstar!’ many times.

The cherubic Zhiqian takes on the extremely challenging role of Mr. Kwan the hardened widower who spends his day working hard and protecting his father’s legacy – the Lai Lai Kopitiam of Lim Peh Street. When faced with the threat of the Jade Dragon Clan, what lengths will he go to protect this legacy?

Kelvin Kek as Allan

KelvinKelvin plays the incorrigible buaya Allan, a role that he claims is so far removed from his own self that he spends hours ruminating over and studying the work of other predatory creatures on campus. When reading over our shoulders Julia screamed, "Please lor! No!" But we truly insist that Kelvin is the sweetest boy you’d ever find... and also he has a car.

Shawn Chan as Seng

ShawnShawn delights us always with his goofy impersonations, and has a truly elastic face. As Seng, Shawn plays the bumbling coffee shop hand with simple aspirations. Seng just wants to fall in love and find his own happily ever after. He finds the love of his life in Sally, but can he gather the courage to stand up for what he wants?

Evelyn Ong as Sally

EvelynThe ever-effervescent Evelyn plays the beautiful Sally, a.k.a the Princess from Penang to her adoring fans Seng and Allan, despite not actually being one of the cast members from Penang. Her voice summons the blue birds, the bambis, and other woodland(s) creatures (did we mention that Zhiqian lives in Woodlands?) and she fleets, she floats, she also fleetly flees she flies. Did we mention that Sally sells sea shells on the sea shore, the shells she sells are sea shells we are sure.

Teo Jin Huang as Ah-Long

Jin HuangJin Huang, the comedian who also hails from Penang, made his theatrical debut in Singapore as the drag queen of the 2004 freshmen beach bash. Since then, Jin Huang has honed his skills in the home-grown (NUS law re-pro) movie “I TORT I Saw a Ghost!” Jin Huang regularly entertains the cast and crew with his repertoire of colourful jokes (of which the predominant colour is blue in all its hues).

As Ah Long, he terrorises the residents of Lim Peh Street because it’s really Lim-Peh’s Street arh, and if you don’t pay protection munny, you die!

Chan Kin Yew as Towkay Teo

Kin YewThere are no words that can adequately describe Kin Yew. Such a presence he casts over the stage, his acting partner Julia hardly dares to make eye contact with him. His penetrating gaze often reduces other female actresses to a pool of... giggles. Having said this, Kin Yew is undisputedly sexy, talented and he is an accomplished performer. His music videos made waves in the fall of 2006 on you-tube. He has since retired from his infamy and you may purchase limited edition DVDs of his greatest hits (or covers of other artiste’s greatest hits) from various underground dealers in law school.

synopsis

synopsis

Kopi Shop Rock is set in the 1970s and revolves around the lives of two families. They both run coffee shops on the fictitious Lim Peh Street and they face constant threats from the evil street gang led by the fierce Ah Long of the Jade Dragon Clan. In order to fend off Ah Long, the two families unite and devise a plan to take him down.

In the midst of the battle, we discover the secret romance between young Joshua and Eliza, the even more clandestine story between their parents, Kwan and Rose, and the budding romance between Sally and Allan.. and Seng! The situation is further complicated by Eliza's scheming sister Melody, who also fights for Joshua's heart.

Will Lim Ah Long continue with his reign of tyranny? Will Eliza and Joshua find their happy ending? Will the quest for love tear Allan and Seng's friendship asunder? Will Kwan and Rose finally tell their story?
